Opening Day Victories For Baseball
Vocca allows one hit to help Roughriders take out Lamar
The Yavapai College baseball team was carried to a 3-0 win over Lamar Community College by a solid pitching performance from Tony Vocca on Friday afternoon at Yavapai in the season opener.
Vocca kept Lamar College off balance while he was on the mound. Lamar managed one hit off of Vocca, who allowed no earned runs, walked three and struck out eight during his 5 2/3 innings of work.
Dean Friedberg went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three YC runners. Friedberg singled in the second and sixth innings, scoring Tony Piazza.
Lamar’s best chance to score was in the sixth inning. With Lamar trailing by one, Vocca surrendered a base on balls with one out and a runner on first. However, the Cottonwood native forced the next batter to fly out.
Roughriders tops Lamar in tight affair
In the nightcap, both passed the lead back and forth, but in the end the home team pulled out a 10-7 win over the visiting Coloradoans.
There were five lead changes in the game, but YC finally managed to stay on top after a strong sixth inning. With the game tied, Josh Tate reached base on an error and Albert Alvarez was plunked by a pitch, Nolan Clark came to the plate with no outs. Clark hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Ashton McCoy from third and Tate from second, and gave the Roughriders the lead for good.
Josh Anderson went 4-for-5 from the dish and drove in three YC runners.
Yavapai returns to the diamond on Saturday for an afternoon twinbill against these same Runnin’ Lopes. The doubleheader will begin at 11:00 AM.
