Yavapai Wins National Title

In only its 39th game all-time, the Yavapai College Soccer Team defeated heavily favored, Passaic County Community College of Paterson, New Jersey 2-1 to capture their first NJCAA National Soccer Championship. Kurt Funkhouser scored the winning goal, assisted by Edson Rico, with 7:37 left in the second sudden death overtime of the 1990 National Title game at Mercer County Community College in Trenton, New Jersey. Kobie Washington scored the tying goal with 25 minutes remaining in regulation while goalkeeper Andre Luciano held the Panthers, 19-0-0 entering the title match, to only one first half goal in 113 minutes of play . At the time, the Roughriders all-time record was 36-1-2.

The 1990 team members also included Joe Harman, Peter Orona, Mike Wilcynski, Justin Ground, Marvin Cassler Joe Owen, Steve Macias, Jeff Stringham, Bobby Bell, Jose Miranda, Ken McMillen, Roger Salazar, Jose Corona, Nick Bramini, Heath Tagtmeyer, Tyler Schlink, Matt Kozul, Ed Brooks, Brett Wright, Tony Robson along with Captains Rocco DeNardis and Remy Bilsback. Twenty years later, the Head Coach is still Mike Pantalione. Today, Yavapai is seven-time national champions while compiling an all-time record of 477-39-15.
