Volleyball Wins Finale
On Friday, the Roughrider volleyball team defeated Chandler/Gilbert Community College 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22) to conclude the 2010 season with a 25-12 overall record and a 12-6 mark in the ACCAC standings.
Playing in her final match as a Roughrider, Haley Shackelford made a final push for conference Player of the Year with 24 kills, only 2 errors, on 44 swings for a hitting percentage of .500. During a stretch that lasted from the latter part of the first set to the middle of the third set, the Colorado native had 10 straight kills. She also dug 11 balls and had 2 blocks. Another sophomore, Tayler Hagan, stepped up with 8 kills, including the match winner. Leading the defense was Suzanne Morris with 3.5 blocks. Chelsea Szretter had a near double-double with 9 kills and 15 digs. Jessica Durbin had 39 assists, 2 kills, 9 digs, and 2 aces.
With the win and Glendale Community College’s loss to Arizona Western College, YC finishes third in ACCAC play, its best finish since 1996. The 2010 sophomores will leave YC with a record of 51-27, the best record for a class since 1995 and 1996.
