The Roughrider soccer team won their sixth consecutive match Wednesday afternoon beating conference foe Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, 2-1. Yavapai improves to 9-3-0 on the season and the Artichokes fall to 6-5-1. Once again the Riders battled 100 plus degree weather to get the victory.

Viktor Rodakovic had a part of each of YC’s two goals on the day. In the 11th minute, the Glendale native took a pass from Ethan Martin and deposited it in the Scottsdale goal. Twenty minutes later, Rodakovic found a streaking Jacob Nevarez for the final Yavapai goal and a 2-0 halftime lead. After intermission, Scottsdale was awarded two penalty kicks. YC goalkeeper Humberto Soriano stopped the first one but Scottsdale found the net on the second one in the 70th minute for the final goal of the day.

With the victory, Head Coach Mike Pantalione surpassed yet another coaching milestone for his 22-year career. Currently, Pantalione is the wins leader among active NJCAA coaches and NJCAA Division I coaches with 471. Today, the Hall-of-Fame coach tied the 37-year retired coach Tom Bichy, former head coach at NJCAA DIII Montgomery-Rockville College, MD for second place in all-time NJCAA wins for a career. The leader for wins is also a 37-year retiree from the coaching ranks, George Vizvary representing Ulster County College, NY, an NJCAA DIII program, with 534 wins. Interestingly, Yavapai owns a 4-0-0 record against a Bichy and Vizvary coached team.

Yavapai returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 2 at Ken Lindley Field entertaining first place Arizona Western College (9-1-1). The Roughriders are looking to avenge an early season loss to the Matadors, 2-1 in Yuma. Saturday’s match will kick-off at 6:00 PM.
