Volleyball Upends AWC
The Roughrider volleyball team came up big in Yuma Wednesday night with a 3-1 victory over Arizona Western College to improve to 11-1 and 3-1 in the ACCAC. Western falls to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Yavapai was in control of the first game until the opponent to its first lead at 19-18 but YC regrouped and took the first game 25-23. The second game was back and forth until Western took the lead at 18-17 and closed out the game 25-21 to tie the match at one. In the third game, YC took control of the game early and went up 2-1 with a 25-21 victory. Kayce Youngberg had a five-point serving to aid in the victory. In the fourth game, both teams were evenly matched until YC used an 8-4 run to sieze control. A 4-point serving run in that stretch included 3 aces by Jessica Durbin that gave YC the 25-19 victory.
YC was led by Haley Shackelford with 14 kills. Chelsea Szretter and Natasha Ray added 9 points. Defensively, Sam Eastburn and Jessica Durbin had 12 digs. Szretter had 11. Suzanne Morris had 6 blocks.
The Roughriders return to the court on Friday, September 17th entertaining South Mountain Community College. In their only meeting last season, YC won 3-1. Friday’s match will be played at Walraven Gym on the campus of Yavapai College and will begin at 7:00 PM.
