Vball Wins Tournament

Taking a break from conference play, the Roughrider volleyball team continued their recent success with a tournament championship in the Cuyamaca City College Tournament. Yavapai won four matches on Saturday to secure the title. YC is now 10-1 overall and 2-1 in ACCAC play.

The Roughriders did not lose a single game in the tournament going 4-0 on the day. YC beat Mt. San Antonio 2-0 (25-17, 25-9); San Diego City College 2-0 (25-13, 25-18); host team Cuyamaca 2-0 (25-13, 25-8); and Cerritos 2-0 (25-16, 25-14).

For her efforts, sophomore Haley Shackelford was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. The Colorado native had 41 points on 38 kills, 2 aces, 1 block and 19 digs. Chelsea Szretter had 40.5 points on 35 kills, 4 aces, 1.5 blocks and 29 digs and was named to the All-Tournament team. Natasha Ray was also named to the All-Tournament team with 25 points on 21 kills and 4.5 blocks. Jessica Durbin had an outstanding tournament with 76 assists and 5 aces.

Yavapai resumes conference action on Wednesday, September 15th in Yuma against Arizona Western College. In four meetings last season, YC won three matches. Wednesday’s contest will begin at 7:00 PM.
