Soccer Wins In OT
In a playoff type atmosphere the #5 ranked Roughrider soccer team beat the visiting Artichokes from Scottsdale Community College Wednesday night 3-2 in overtime. YC improves to 2-0-0 on the young season and Scottsdale falls to 1-1-0. The victory extends the Roughriders’ home winning streak to 38 games, the third longest in the history of the program (58 matches from 1989-1995 and 56 matches from 2000 to 2005).
Scottsdale struck first blood Wednesday night finding the net in the 7th minute of the match. YC got the tying goal in the 13th minute of the game by Gregory Efiom assisted by Carlos Lara. The game remained tied going into intermission. After the break, YC took its first lead of the game as Lara found a streaking Jacob Nevarez who deposited the ball in the goal in the 54th minute. However, Scottsdale responded in the 76th minute to tie the game and send it into sudden death overtime.
YC got the game winner with 7:12 into the extra period. Unassisted, Efiom got his second goal of the match and the game winner to give the home team their 44th all-time victory over the Artichokes in 45 attempts.
The Roughriders will be on the road for the Labor Day weekend beginning in Yuma on Saturday, September 4th against #13 ranked Arizona Western College. On a quick turnaround, YC will face Pima Community College on Monday, September 6th in a matinee affair in Tucson. Yavapai’s next home contest will be on Wednesday, September 8th at the Prescott Valley Amphitheater against Phoenix College. Kick-off will be at 6:00 PM.
