Volleyball Goes 4-0
On Friday, Yavapai started the 2010 season strong with a 25-13, 25-9, 25-10 victory over Garden City in the Runnin’ Lopes Invitational. Freshmen opposite Natasha Ray led YC with 13 points on 8 kills, 3 aces, and 2 blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Haley Shackelford led the Riders’ with 10 kills. Sophomore setter Rachel Lindley had 18 assists. Freshmen outside hitter Chelsea Szretter had 10 digs.
YC earned the second win of the season with a hard fought 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23 victory over a tough Western Wyoming team. Sophomore outside hitter Haley Shackelford led the Roughriders with 24 points on 14 kills, 7 aces, and 2 blocks. Shackelford also led the team with 19 digs. Ray had a double-double to with 14 kills and 15 digs. Freshmen middle blocker LeAnna Lloyd had 10 kills and 1 block. Freshmen setter Jessica Durbin led YC with 36 assists.
The winning continued on day 2 as Yavapai beat Vernon 25-19, 25-18, 25-13 to go to 3-0. Once again, Shackelford led the Riders with 14 points on 11 kills, 2 aces, and 1 block. Freshmen middle blocker Suzanne Morris had 8 kills and 1 block. Ray had 10 digs and 7 kills and Durbin had 27 assists.
YC concluded the tournament with its best effort in a 25-16, 25-11, 25-12 win over Dodge City. Shackelford led the Riders with 16 points on 14 kills, 1 ace, and 1 block and Ray led the defense with 12 digs. Szretter had 10 kills and 1 ace and Durbin had 27 assists.
Yavapai opens ACCAC play on Wednesday at the defending Division 1 Region 1 champions, Eastern Arizona College. EAC begins the season ranked 13th.
