Roughrider Soccer—Another Promising Decade Begins

The Yavapai College soccer team, seven-time national champions, will begin its 22nd season with 22 new players. With all the players from the perfect 26-0-0, 2008 National Championship season moved on to four-year university programs or the professional ranks, the Roughriders look to reload for the upcoming 2010 season with only three returners. They include all-around standout Willie Hammack from Prescott High School, defender Matt Hazzard from Torrance, Calif. and goalkeeper Humberto Soriano from Phoenix. Mike Pantalione (462-34-14, overall record) enters his fourth decade as the school’s only head soccer coach. The program won its first match on Sept. 1, 1989 and has played in 13 national championship games while capturing 21 consecutive conference titles.

The Roughriders season, conference and home opener is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 27 vs. Paradise Valley CC at the Prescott Valley Amphitheater. The Prescott home opener is set for Wednesday, Sept. 1 against Scottsdale CC at Ken Lindley Field. The 2010 NJCAA National Tournament will take place in Tyler, Texas where the Roughriders won three of their seven national titles.

Since 1997, Yavapai has captured five national championships. No other NJCAA Division One program can boast more than a single title. The incoming class of soccer candidates:
