Baseball Tames The Cougars
The #16 ranked Roughrider baseball team swept a critical doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Roughrider Park over South Mountain Community College (37-16, 25-11), 5-4 and 21-5. Yavapai improves to 37-17 overall and 27-9 in the ACCAC standings. The victories break a tie with the Cougars and moves the Roughriders into a first place tie with Central Arizona College. The Vaqueros dropped a doubleheader Tuesday at the hands of Arizona Western College, 3-2 and 5-4. However, Central Arizona College holds the tiebreaker with two games remaining in the league schedule.
In the opener, Dustin Hobbs pitched 6 strong innings scattering 6 hits and striking out 6 Cougar batters. Hobbs improves to 11-2 on the season. Pulama Silva threw the final inning to notch his league leading 15th save of the season. Cam Schiller had a terrific game going 3 for 3 hitting his 4th and 5th home runs of the season. Aaron Fujiki was 1 for 2 with a double and 3 runs batted in.
In the second game, the Roughrider offense pounded the opponent pitching and Alex Miranda allowed only three hits to get his 7th win of the season. Schiller picked up where he left off in the first game going 2 for 4 with two RBI’s. Fujiki was 4 for 5 with a double and 3 runs knocked in and Zach Haley hit a grand slam and recorded 5 runs batted in.
Yavapai concludes the regular season on Saturday, May 1st at Phoenix College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
