Soccer Wins Thriller

At Ken Lindley Field Thursday night, the Roughrider soccer team scored with 42 seconds remaining in the match off a corner kick to defeat Pima Community College 2-1 and to advance to their 20th NJCAA Region I championship match in school history. YC will be seeking their 19th Region I title and their 19th trip to the NJCAA National Tournament being held in Trenton, New Jersey. Yavapai will host Arizona Western College a winner over Phoenix College Thursday night in Phoenix.

With less than a minute to go and the scored tied at 1, Jonathan Castro found the back of the net on a corner kick from Greg Gilmer. All of the scoring in the match took place in the second half with YC striking first in the 58th minute. Pima answered six minutes later to tie the match and Castro provided the game winner in thrilling fashion.

Meanwhile, Arizona Western College beat Phoenix College in the sixth round of penalty kicks. At the end of regulation and overtime periods, the score was tied 1-1. AWC outlasted the Bears on penalty kicks knocking in 6 to PC’s 5. The trip to the Region I Championship match will be the first time that the Matadors have reached the title game and the first time that both teams have met in post-season action. With tonight’s victory, YC is now 36-1 all-time in region post-season play and have beaten every conference team in the play-offs except Arizona Western.

The match will be played at Ken Lindley Field. Both teams split a pair of matches this past season with YC winning the first one 5-1 in Prescott Valley and in the final match of the regular season, AWC won 4-0 in Yuma. Saturday night’s kick-off will be at 6:00 PM.
