Play-off Hopes Continue For V-Ball

The Lady Rider volleyball team kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday in Yuma despite going 1-1 on the day. Saturday afternoon, YC fell to the ACCAC DI Champions #10 ranked Eastern Arizona College 3-0 (17-25, 16-25, 11-25). EAC (18-1) clinched the title Friday night with a 3-game victory over Arizona Western College.

Saturday evening the lady spikers won a 5-game thriller over AWC (16-15, 6-5) to remain in the playoff hunt. Things looked bleak after the first game with YC falling 11-25. However, the Riders bounced back in the next two winning both games by scores of 25-21. AWC took the fourth game, 19-25 to force the fifth and final game. The Roughriders outlasted the Matadors 15-13 to win the match. In four matches this season with AWC, Yavapai has won 3. Before this season, the Roughriders had not beaten the Matadors since 1996.

YC is now 22-13 overall and 5-4 in the ACCAC standings. Only two teams make the Division I NJCAA Region I Playoffs. Eastern Arizona has already clinched the top spot and Arizona Western and Yavapai are battling for the final spot. YC has three conference games remaining and AWC has two matches remaining. The Roughriders play a non-conference match Monday night at Southwestern College. On Wednesday, October 21st Yavapai will play their final home match of the season with Glendale Community College coming to the Storm Center. The first serve will be at 7:00 PM.
