Soccer Upsets Top Team In Milestone Match
In their 500th overall match, the #6 ranked Roughrider soccer team got their biggest win of the 2009 season Saturday night at Ken Lindley Field. YC upset the #5 ranked and top team in the ACCAC Phoenix College (10-1-3), 3-2. Yavapai improves to 12-3-0. In their 21-year history, the Rider kickers have never lost back to back matches and have an unprecedented 455-32-13 record.
Yavapai began the scoring in the ninth minute of the match with Jonathan Castro finding the back of the net on a pass from Vince Martin. David Malloy scored an unassisted goal in the 27th minute and Phoenix college scored with 46 seconds remaining in halftime to go into intermission down 2-1.
Martin got his second assist on the night as he found Greg Gilmer in the 70th minute and in the 77th minute Phoenix scored the last goal of the match for the 3-2 result.
YC will have two road matches next week beginning with South Mountain Community College (0-11-0) entertaining the Roughriders on Monday, October 12th in Phoenix. In their previous meeting, YC pounded the Cougars 7-0. Kick-off on Monday will be at 3:30 PM.
