Volleyball Finishes Tourney 4-2
The ‘Riders began day 2 at the NMMI Invitational against #15 Casper College. YC gave Casper all they could handle but came up short 22-25 in set 1 and 18-25 in set 2. The Roughriders were led by Freshmen Outside Hitter Haley Shackelford with 10 points on 8 kills and 2 blocks. Sophomore Libero Tialei Agader led the defense with 11 digs.
Yavapai bounced back in their next match beating Garden City in 2 games, 25-15 and 25-12. The ‘riders hit .358 as a team led by Sophomore Middle Blocker Jennifer Hess who hit .700 with 8 kills. Freshmen Setter Rachel Lindley had 17 assists and 2 aces. Sophomore Outside Hitter Jordan Anderson led all scorers with 9 points on 9 kills. Sophomore Libero Tialei Agader led the defense with 9 digs.
After finishing pool play with a 3-1 record, the Roughriders earned the #4 seed in bracket play setting up a rematch with Lee College. Lee started the match strong winning the first set easily, 25-15. The ‘Riders put up a tougher fight in set 2 but lost 23-25. Down 2 sets to none, YC rallied for an amazing comeback winning the next three sets 26-24, 25-15, 16-14. Sophomore led the Roughriders with 17 points on 15 kills and 2 aces. Freshmen Middle Blocker Tayler Hagan scored 9 points all on kills. Sophomore Libero Tialei Agader led the defense with 27 digs.
After playing 9 consecutive sets the ‘Riders faced the host team, NMMI, in the semi-finals. Out of gas, Yavapai struggled the first two games falling 14-25 and 13-25. Determined to put up a fight, Freshmen Setter Kara Stueven rallied the team but ultimately came up short, 23-25. The Roughriders finished the tournament in 3rd place with a 4-2 record.
YC plays host to Phoenix College on Wednesday, September 2nd. The match will be played in the Storm Center beginning at 7:00 PM.
