Baseball Swept For First Time
The Roughrider baseball team was swept Tuesday afternoon for the first time this season and has lost three of their last four games. South Mountain Community College blanked Yavapai in the first game 1-0 and outlasted the Roughriders in the nightcap 6-5. Yavapai falls to 28-7 in ACCAC play and 43-10 overall.
The Cougars improve to 26-10 in ACCAC play and 40-14 overall. Yavapai has clinched a playoff berth in the NJCAA Region I tournament and needs one win this weekend to secure home field advantage throughout.
In game one, Rick Anton was the hard luck pitcher from the mound after throwing 6 1/3 innings of four hit baseball. The offense was stymied by the opponents pitching staff managing only one hit on the game coming from the bat of Dominic Piazza.
In game two, Merrill Kelly threw six innings allowing 2 earned runs on 8 hits and 4 strikeouts. Ian Campbell took the loss throwing the final two innings of the game. Offensively, Jake Chilton was three for three with a run scored. Piazza and Zac Castleberry each collected two hits.
Yavapai plays host to Phoenix College (14-20, 24-27) on Saturday, April 25th in what could be the regular season finale. If necessary, YC will make up a rain cancelled game with Cochise College on Monday, April 27th. Game time will be at 12:00 PM.
