Baseball Splits With The Vaqueros
The Roughrider baseball team went into Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader three games up on second place Central Arizona College and at the end of the day the lead remains the same with five games left in the regular season.
YC split with the Vaqueros losing the first game 6-2 and winning the second game in extra innings, 5-4. Yavapai improves their league leading record to 28-5 and to 43-8 overall. CAC is 26-8 in ACCAC action and 41-10 on the season.
In the opening game, the Roughrider bats were silenced after scoring 53 runs in the previous four games. Starting pitcher Jimmy Patterson held YC to only three hits and two runs. Kirby Yates took the loss for the home team surrendering five runs on seven hits while striking out six.
In the nightcap, the Roughriders needed extra innings to get the victory. With two outs in the bottom of the tenth, Jordan Payne singled home Zac Castleberry who, earlier in the inning, singled and went to second on a balk from the pitcher. Pulama Silva picked up the win in relief of Russell Havens. Payne had four hits on the afternoon with two runs batted in. Jake Chilton was a perfect four for four and Dominic Piazza and Ty Forney each collected two hits a piece.
On Tuesday, April 21st, the Roughriders will travel to Phoenix to play the third place South Mountain Community College Cougars (24-10, 38-14). In March, YC swept a twinbill from the Cougars in Prescott, 10-9 and 15-7. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM on the campus of South Mountain in Phoenix.
