YC Bats Explode
The #4 ranked Roughrider baseball team erupted for 31 runs Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Arizona College (4-28, 11-39), 11-1 and 20-0 to improve their league leading record to 27-4 and 42-7 overall. In the past four games, Yavapai has outscored their opponents 53-2.
Rick Anton ran his record to 8-2 in five innings of work surrendering only four hits and striking out 8 Gila Monster batters. Brett Sowers was four for four knocking his league leading 10th home run of the season. Prescott native Cam Schiller was three for three with five runs batted in and Kirby Yates collected two hits.
In the nightcap, Merrill Kelly (9-0) lowered his league leading ERA on a two hit shutout in five innings on the hill. Offensively, YC had 18 hits including five home runs (Jordan Payne, Dominic Piazza, John Jones, Landon Joost and Sowers). The 20 runs are the most runs the Roughriders have scored this season and the most runs batted in (20).
The victory sets up a showdown with the second place team in the conference and #5 ranked Central Arizona College. Yavapai swept a twinbill from the Vaqueros in Coolidge earlier in the season, 1-0 and 3-0. The doubleheader will be played at Yavapai College on Saturday, April 18th. The first pitch will be at 12:00 PM.
