The Roughrider baseball team swept a critical doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Roughrider Park against Pima Community College, 11-6 and 12-1. Second place Central Arizona College split a doubleheader with Scottsdale Community College pushing the Roughriders lead to 2 games in the ACCAC. Yavapai improves their overall record to 39-7 and 24-4 in league play.

Rick Anton (7-2) was spot on in the opening game pitching a complete game. The Prescott native allowed eight hits and five earned runs while striking out eight Aztec batters. Offensively, Dominic Piazza and Brett Sowers were perfect from the plate (3 for 3). Piazza had a double, a triple and two runs batted in. Sowers hit a double and a home run and knocked in four. Bobby Rinard and Cam Schiller each added two hits.

In the nightcap, Merrill Kelly went the distance to record his eighth victory of the year. Ty Forney and John Jones had two hits and Sowers and Zac Castleberry went yard for the Roughrider offense. Sowers was 4 for 5 on the day with seven RBI’s.

Yavapai returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 11th entertaining Cochise College. YC swept the Apaches earlier this season in Douglas. The first pitch will be at 12:00 PM.
