Baseball Remains In First With Split

The #1 ranked Roughrider baseball team split a home doubleheader with Arizona Western College Saturday afternoon to stay atop the ACCAC standings. Second place Central Arizona College (21-5) also split a twinbill to remain one game behind Yavapai. This afternoon, YC won the first game 7-1 and fell in the nightcap 5-3. The Roughriders are now 22-4 in league action and 37-7 overall.

Kirby Yates (3-1) pitched six scoreless innings to get his 3rd victory on the season. Dominic Piazza collected two hits and two runs batted in for the Riders and Brett Sowers towered his team leading seventh home run of the season and fetched home three runs.

In the second game, Russell Havens began the game on the hill and left in the seventh inning with the game tied at three. Ian Campbell came on in relief and surrendered two Matador runs to get the loss. The Roughriders were sloppy in the field committing three errors on the afternoon. Offensively, YC stranded eight runners. Ty Forney, Brad Johnson and Jordan Payne each had two hits with Forney knocking in two runs.

Yavapai plays host to Pima Community College on Tuesday, April 7th. The Aztecs swept Eastern Arizona College this afternoon to push their record to 26-15-1 overall and 16-10 in ACCAC play. Yavapai faced Pima in February on the Aztecs home field. Pima won the first game 8-0 and Yavapai won the second game 6-3. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park in Prescott.
