The #2 ranked Roughrider baseball team split a home doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Paradise Valley Community College (20-14, 10-10). YC dropped the first game 4-3 and bounced back in the nightcap 12-2. Yavapai remains in first place of the ACCAC with a 17-3 conference mark and 32-6 overall.

Both teams were tied at 1 going into the sixth inning of the first game before PVCC broke through for three runs in their half of the inning. Yavapai countered with two runs of their own and had the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh inning but failed to push the run across.

Rick Anton threw 6 2/3 innings surrendering only four hits and four runs none of them earned. The Prescott native recorded 13 strikeouts but fell to 5-2 on the season. Brett Sowers was 2 for 3 from the plate and Landon Joost was 1 for 1 with three runs batted in.

The conference leaders in team hitting could not be held down in the second game run ruling the visitors in seven innings. Merrill Kelly improved his league leading ERA allowing 0 runs in six innings of play while striking out nine. Bobby Rinard, Ty Forney, Joost and Jordan Payne each collected two hits and Brad Johnson was 1 for 3 with two runs batted in.

Yavapai entertains ACCAC Division II leader Scottsdale Community College (21-11, 20-8) on Saturday, March 28. The twinbill will begin at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park in Prescott.
