Baseball Splits With Matadors
After being indoors for seven days due to the weather, the #18 ranked Roughrider baseball team took to the field in Yuma to face conference foe Arizona Western College.
Unfortunately, YC felt the effects with poor timing at the plate and five errors in the field. Nonetheless, YC came away with an all important road split losing the first game 5-4 and winning the nightcap 7-4. Yavapai’s overall record is now 9-3 and 1-1 in ACCAC action.
Sophomore Rick Anton took the loss in the first game going 6 2/3 innings and giving up nine hits and three walks and striking out six. Cam Schiller and Kirby Yates provided the offense each going 2 for 4.
Merrill Kelly started the second game on the mound going six innings and allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Ian Campbell went 2 2/3 innings to get the win and Pulama Silva pitched 1/3 of an inning to get the save.
Bobby Rinard and Yates picked up three hits on the afternoon and Schiller and Dom Piazza collected two hits each. Yates had three RBI’s on the game and Piazza knocked in two.
Yavapai travels to Pima Community College on Tuesday, February 17th for an afternoon doubleheader with Yates and Russell Havens getting the starting nods.
Tentatively, Wednesday’s twinbill against Thompson River will be played at Chino Valley High School due to field conditions at Roughrider Park.
