Roughrider Soccer Earns Top Honors
The Roughrider soccer team dominated the conference and region post-season honors this past weekend claiming ACCAC and NJCAA Region I Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year. Moreover, YC placed four players total on the First Team All-Conference and All-Region I teams to bring the program’s overall count to 97 All-Region I players in the program’s 20-year history.
Team All-ACCAC and 1st Team All-NJCAA Region I
Sophomore Justin Meram garnered Player of the Year honors for both the region and league. Meram, the all-time leader for points scored in a career, had 25 goals this season to go along with 17assists for a total of 67 points. The Michigan native has 46 total goals for his 2-year career at Yavapai putting him second behind Edson Rico (1989-90) with 48.
Runner-up for Player of the Year was sophomore Francis Khamis. The 6’3” attacker accumulated 57 points on the year with 24 goals and 9 assists.
Defender Chris Hunter anchored a defense that twelve times held opponents scoreless while giving up only 8 goals on the season.
The Goalkeeper of the Year was YC’s own Sam Hayden. The sophomore from Jackson, Wyoming had a 0.44 goals against average for the season that ranks him in the top ten all-time for Roughrider goalkeepers.
