YC Women’s Volleyball Announces 2008 Schedule
Roughriders will compete in two of the nation’s top NJCAA tournaments.
The YC women’s volleyball team has announced its 2008 schedule, which features two matches against cross town rival Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and three trips out of state to compete against some of the perennial junior college powers.
The season kicks off August 22nd in Roswell, NM at the 2008 New Mexico Military Institute Classic. The Roughriders will open with Pratt College, a Division 2 team from Kansas. Next they will play against the host team, NMMI. The Roughriders will finish pool play against Division 1 schools Otero College and Vernon College.
The following weekend the Roughriders head to Salt Lake City, UT to compete in the SLCC Invitational. Potential opponents include last season’s Division 1 National Champion, Western Nebraska CC. Also attending are College of Southern Idaho (7th in the nation last year) and traditional power Hutchinson College. The host team, SLCC finished 3rd in the nation last season.
The Roughriders start ACCAC play against two of the top four Division 2 teams from last year. They are at South Mountain CC on Wednesday, Sept 3rd and home against Glendale CC on Friday, Sept 5th. The Riders’ then take a break from conference play with an away match against cross-town rival ERAU on Wednesday, September 10th. The next day the Roughriders leave for Twin Falls, ID to compete in the 2008 CSI Invitational. Potential opponents include defending NWAC champion Mt. Hood College, CSI, SLCC, and Blinn College.
With 3 tournaments, 1 non-conference match, and 2 conference matches already under their belt, the Roughriders play 3 of their next 4 conferences matches at home. After a trip to Scottsdale CC on Wednesday, September 17th, they play three home matches in four days against Mesa CC (Sept. 19), Chandler-Gilbert CC (Sept. 20), and Eastern Arizona College (Sept. 22). After playing 3 matches at home, the Roughriders have to hit the road to play 4 of their next 5 matches away from the Storm Center. Trips to Phoenix College (Sept. 24), Chandler-Gilbert CC (Sept. 26), Arizona Western College (Sept. 27), and Glendale CC (Oct. 3) make this the toughest stretch of the season. The Roughriders do get to stay at home once with a match against Pima CC on Wednesday, October 1st.
The Roughriders will then enjoy the comforts of home playing 5 of their final 8 matches at the Storm Center. Home matches against SMCC (Oct. 8), ERAU (Oct. 14), SCC (Oct. 17), AWC (Oct. 18), and PC (Oct. 24) should determine where the Riders’ finish in the tough ACCAC.
This season will mark the return of the Annual Alumni Scrimmage which will take place on Saturday, October 4th at 2:30 as part of Yavapai College’s 40th Anniversary Celebration.
On Friday, October 24th the Roughriders will play their final regular season match at home and will honor 5 sophomores, Kayla Bia, Brittany Garcia, Jennifer Hess, Meghan McKindles, and Stacia Wolff before the match.
The ACCAC Division 1 playoff match will take place on Saturday, November 1st at the home site of the #1 seed. The winner of that match will then host the runner-up from Region 18 on Saturday, November 8th with the winner advancing to the National Tournament in Sioux City, IA.
