Will face Central Arizona College for Region I title
The #11 ranked Roughrider baseball team advanced to the NJCAA Region I Division I Championship Series with a 9-4 victory today over Cochise College. YC sweeps the series 2-0, to earn the berth for the title. Yavapai is now 41-14-1 overall.
The offense struck first pinning 5 runs on the Cochise pitching staff in the first four innings of play. Pitcher Kirby Yates (7-4) threw a strong 7 1/3 innings allowing only 4 earned runs, 3 hits and striking out 8. The final 1 2/3 frames belonged to sophomore Justin Harper as he gave up only 1 hit and struck out 3.
Offensively, Zac Castleberry was 2 for 4 with one home run and three runs batted in. Kole Calhoun also went deep with two RBI’s. Dominic Piazza was the hitting star for the series as he went 3 for 5 with three RBI’s today and finishes the two games 5 for 9 with five runs batted in.
Yavapai will now face Central Arizona College in a best of three series beginning Thursday, May 8. The Vaqueros beat South Mountain Community College in two games to advance to the championship series. In four games this season, YC won three of those meetings. The leagues top two pitchers, Rick Anton (13-3) and Josh Spence (11-2), are probable starters in game 1. The winning team will host the NJCAA West District Finals with the winner advancing to the National Tournament in Grand Junction, Colorado. Thursday’s game will begin at 2:00 PM at Roughrider Park.
