Roughriders Strike First

Chance to clinch series tomorrow. Yates on the mound.

The #11 ranked Roughrider baseball team scored 4 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning this afternoon to edge by the Cochise College Apaches, 6-5 in the best of three NJCAA Region I Series. Both teams will face off again tomorrow. If YC wins, they will advance to next weekend’s championship series. If Cochise wins, they will force a game three to be played on Saturday at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park.

Freshman pitcher Rick Anton (13-3) had a stellar performance to record his 13th win on the season. He threw 8 2/3 innings allowing 10 hits, 1 earned run and 2 walks while striking out six. Merrill Kelly pitched the final out to record the save.

Offensively, the Roughriders pounded out 14 hits against Cochise pitching. Randen Abafo, Bobby Rinard, Dan Duffy, Zac Castleberry Jared Norris and Dominic Piazza each had two hits on the day. Piazza had two RBI’s including the game winner.

Sophomore right hander Kirby Yates (6-4) takes the hill tomorrow with a chance to clinch the series. The first pitch will be thrown at 2:00 PM on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
