Brown Named School’s Athlete of the Year
Joins three other players signing with D-1 schools
In a special ceremony Wednesday night at the Performance Hall on the Prescott campus, it was announced sophomore defender Denton Brown from Eugene, Oregon was named Yavapai College Athlete of the Year. Brown started all 51 matches (46-2-3) in his two-year career, a team record. He was the captain of the 2007 National Championship Soccer Team.
In addition, he is in the YC Honors Program with a 4.00 grade point average and will continue his academic and athletic career at the University of Vermont this fall. This marked the second year in a row a soccer player was named the school’s athlete of the year. In 2007, Roger Espinoza, who led Ohio State University to the NCAA Championship Game last fall and currently playing in Major League Soccer with Kansas City, was the award winner.
In addition to Denton Brown, three other players have signed with NCAA Division One programs. They include defender Camilo Valencia (started all 51 matches) from Highlands Ranch, Colorado who inked with the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Forward Francis Khamis, the Roughriders leading scorer in their national championship season, will join Valencia at UNLV this fall.
Finally, NJCAA & NSCAA First Team All-America midfielder Irving Garcia, from San Luis, Arizona, will play at the University of California-Irvine.
