YC Softball: ACCAC DI Champs!

Rodriguez gets the victory in both ends of the doubleheader and homers twice

Yavapai College had not hosted a softball team since 1981, so the expectations were to get reacquainted with the conference and possibly make the playoffs. The Roughriders did better than that…they became the ACCAC Division I Champs! After sweeping the #3 ranked Eastern Arizona College on their home field, 12-3 and 5-3, Stacy Iveson’s team earns the right to host the NJCAA Region I Tournament on May, 2-3, 2008 with the winner advancing to the National Tournament. YC concludes the regular season with a 23-9 conference mark and 42-15 overall.

In the first game of the day, Jenna Rodriguez pitched a complete game to get her 25th victory of the year allowing only 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 1.

Yavapai’s Offensive Action

  • Caitlin Stangl (2/4, 1 run, 1 RBI)
  • Aly Rhodes (1/1, 2 runs, 1 RBI)
  • Kacie Smith (3/4, 2 runs, 3 RBI)
  • Brittany Tucker (1/3, 1 run, 1 RBI)
  • Jenna Rodriguez (2/3, 1 home run, 3 runs, 3 RBI)
  • Briana Swift (1/3, 1 home run, 2 runs, 2 RBI)

In the nightcap, Britinie Hardine began the game on the mound allowing 3 earned runs and five hits in three innings of work. Rodriguez threw the final four innings shutting out the Gila Monsters and striking out six for her 26th win of the season. Rodriguez and Tucker both hit the long ball for the Riders to lead the offense.

Yavapai takes the #1 seed into the Region tourney with EAC holding the #2 seed and Pima Community College is the #3 seed. All Region I Tournament games will be played at Roughrider Park with times yet to be determined.
