ACCAC Champs… Again!

Winners of three of the last four conference titles

The #14 ranked Roughrider baseball team clinched the ACCAC title this afternoon in decisive fashion with a 23-4 whipping of Chandler/Gilbert Community College in the opener and followed that up with a 9-5 win in the nightcap. Yavapai has won the championship three of the last four seasons. With the conference title, YC will have home field advantage throughout the NJCAA Region I playoffs.

In the first round, Yavapai will play host to the yet to be determined #4 seed in the ACCAC. The #2 and #3 teams will meet at the site of the higher seed with the winners of both series facing each other for the right to host the NJCAA District playoffs. Sky Smeltzer’s squad is now 39-14-1 overall and 29-7 in the league standings.

Conference wins leader, Rick Anton (12-3) was stellar from the mound pitching all six innings giving up only six hits and striking out nine Coyote hitters. Jared Norris led the YC from the plate going 4 for 4 with seven RBI’s and three runs scored. Dan Duffy was perfect from the dish, 2/2, with a home run and four runs scored. Dominic Piazza and Erik Knutson each had two hits a piece.

In the second game, Taylor Lewis got his sixth win on the year and Justin Harper pitched the final four innings to get his second save of the season. Braden Degamo, Louie Templeton and Norris each collected two hits in the game and Knutson hit a home run with three RBI’s.

YC will travel to Douglas on Saturday, April 26th to conclude the regular season against Cochise College in a possible playoff match up. In their previous meeting, Yavapai won the first game 7-3 and Cochise won the nightcap, 13-8. The games will begin at 12:00 PM.
