Roughriders Increase Their Lead With Sweep
Cochise and South Mountain split their doubleheaders
In dramatic fashion, the #14 ranked Roughrider baseball team swept a doubleheader from Central Arizona College yesterday and increased their lead in the ACCAC Division I race. Cochise College (22-10) and South Mountain Community College (22-10) split their twinbills to fall three games back of the league leading Riders. Yavapai is now 35-14-1 overall and 25-7 in the conference race.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Rick Anton continued his dominance of the league with a complete game four hitter to pick up his 11th win of the year. Bobby Rinard was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Louie Templeton added a home run and two RBI’s.
Finding themselves down by five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning of the nightcap, YC battled back to score six runs in their half of the frame to take the lead on a Kole Calhoun sacrifice fly and Merrill Kelly shut the lid in the ninth to cap the sweep over the Vaqueros. Zac Castleberry was 4 for 4 with four RBI’s and two runs scored. Dan Duffy was 3 for 4 with two doubles and one run scored and Erik Knutson was 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Kelly pitched the final two innings to get his fourth win on the season.
Yavapai plays host to Eastern Arizona College (5-27) on Saturday, April 19th. The Roughriders swept a doubleheader from the Gila Monsters in March, 3-2 and 2-0. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College.
