The #17 ranked Yavapai College baseball team improved their overall record to 33-12-1 and 23-5 in the ACCAC standings with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Matadors from Arizona Western College today at Roughrider Park, 10-4 and 17-6. YC maintains 3-game lead over Cochise College (33-11-1, 20-8) who swept Eastern Arizona College (9-32-1, 5-23) today and increase their lead over South Mountain Community College (31-14, 19-9) to 4 games after they split with Pima Community College (30-15, 16-12) today in Tucson.
Hitting was the strength of the day for the Riders. In two games, Yavapai pounded out 30 hits, led by Louie Templeton (6/8, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run, 5 runs scored and 4 RBI’s). Deven Braden had a nice day at the plate going 6 for 8 with 2 doubles, 4 runs batted in and 4 runs scored. Kole Calhoun was the hero of the second game hitting 4 for 5 with three home runs, including the walk-off bomb, six RBI’s and four runs scored. Rick Anton got his league leading 10th win on the year surrendering only five hits and striking out five.
YC returns to the diamond on Saturday in Tucson against Pima Community College. The Roughriders split a twinbill with the Aztecs in their first meeting of the year by dropping the first game 5-0 and bouncing back in the nightcap, 16-6. Kirby Yates and Russell Havens get the starts for the home team. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM on the campus of PCC in Tucson.
