Yavapai Settles For Split
Conference lead remains the same for the Roughriders
Today’s doubleheader had many possible implications for the #13 Roughrider baseball team and the #14 Cochise College ball club. For YC, the chance to increase their first place lead in the ACCAC. For the visiting Apaches, the prospect of first place. Neither team seized the opportunity. Yavapai won the opener 7-3 and Cochise won a slugfest in the nightcap, 18-13. Yavapai is now 30-11-1 overall and 20-4 in league standings and Cochise moves to 31-9-1 overall and 18-6 in the conference.
In the first game, Rick Anton (8-3) shut the door on the visiting team throwing six innings, allowing eight hits, two walks, two earned runs and striking out five. The freshman lefty got plenty of support from the offense with Zac Castleberry, Dan Duffy, Jared Norris and Bobby Rinard collecting two hits a piece.
Offense was not a problem for either team in the second game with Yavapai knocking 22 hits and the visitors pounding out 20 knocks. The 18 Cochise runs is the most runs given up by Roughrider pitchers this year.
