Baseball Splits On The Road
Head Coach Sky Smeltzer’s squad had a tough task today in not only playing a doubleheader on the road but also facing the top rated pitcher across the nation in the JUCO ranks, Josh Spence.
YC faired well as they knocked off Spence and the Central Arizona College Vaqueros in the first game, 6-4 but dropped the nightcap, 7-6. The #9 ranked Roughriders are now 25-9-1 overall and 16-2 in ACCAC action.
Kirby Yates (4-2) got the victory for Yavapai in the first game throwing 4 1/3 innings, scattering five hits and two strikeouts. Rick Anton pitched the final 2 2/3 frames to get the save. The offense was facing the league leader in ERA, strikeouts and wins from CAC, however the YC bats handed the left-handed Australian native his first loss and first earned run given up. YC was led by Dan Duffy as he went 2 for 3, 2 RBI’s and 2 runs. Bobby Rinnard was 2 for 2 with a run batted in and a run scored. Braden Degamo and Zac Castleberry were 2 for 3 each.
Central Arizona got revenge in the second game as they scored the winning run in the bottom half of the ninth inning. Taylor Lewis (3-1) took the loss throwing 2 1/3 innings and giving up one hit and one earned run. Castleberry finished his day with three hits including a home run and three runs scored. Erik Knutson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Dominic Piazza connected on his second dinger of the year.
Yavapai travels to Thatcher to tangle with Eastern Arizona College (8-23-1, 4-14) on Tuesday in a conference twinbill. This will be the first time these two teams have met this year. Anton (6-2) and Lewis will be the starting pitchers. The games will begin at 12:00 PM.
