Riders Remain Unblemished In League
The Roughrider baseball team continues to roll sweeping their seventh straight doubleheader today over the visiting South Mountain Community College Cougars, 4-3 and 12-2.
The victories keep Yavapai’s conference record perfect at 14-0 and their overall record improves to 19-4-1.
In the first game, Bobby Rinnard knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Starting pitcher Kirby Yates (3-1) went the distance to record his third win on the season surrendering only five hits and 2 walks on 4 strikeouts. From the plate, Louie Templeton was 2 for 3 with a run batted in.
The nightcap was stopped in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule as Yavapai hitters provided twelve runs for starting pitcher Merrill Kelly (3-0). Offensively, Dan Duffy was 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Kole Calhoun was 2 for 4 with a run scored and one RBI. Erik Knutson was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and Templeton remained hot from the dish going 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI’s.
Head Coach Sky Smeltzer’s nine returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 11th in a non-conference match up with the visiting Illinois Central College Cougars (4-1). Russell Havens and Kirk Dehler get the starting nod on the mound. The twinbill begins at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
