Baseball Win 12 Straight

The Roughrider baseball team swept their sixth consecutive doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Yuma against Arizona Western College, 3-0 and 4-3 (11 innings).

The victories keep YC in first place in the ACCAC with a 12-0 league record and are 17-4-1 overall. Before today’s twinbill, Head Coach Sky Smeltzer’s team was one game up on Cochise College (15-4, 9-1).

In the opener, Rick Anton (6-1) was stellar from the mound pitching the complete game shutout. The Prescott native allowed only three hits with no walks and struck out seven Matador batters. Kole Calhoun led the offense going 2 for 4 with two runs batted in. Erik Knutson was also 2 for 4 with one RBI. Jake Chilton was 1 for 1 with three walks and two runs scored.

In extra innings, YC won the nightcap with timely hitting and gutsy pitching. Taylor Lewis (2-0) started the game on the hill surrendering only two earned runs on four hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Justin Harper (0-1) pitched out of a seemingly impossible jam in the ninth inning to extend the game past regulation. With the bases loaded and nobody out, the sophomore hurler served up a ground ball to shortstop, a strike out and a fly ball to right to escape disaster. After getting two more outs in the next frame, Jonathon Dupuy (1-0) relieved Harper to finish the game with the victory. In the eleventh inning, Louie Templeton scored the go ahead run after a double and two wild pitches.

Offensively, Jared Norris was 2 for 4 with a home run, a double and three RBI’s. Zac Castleberry had two hits in three at bats for the game.

Yavapai returns to the home diamond on Saturday, March 8th facing South Mountain Community College. Before today, the Cougars were 8-1 in conference play, one and a half games behind the Roughriders. Last spring, both teams won twice in four meetings. Kirby Yates (2-1) and Merrill Kelly (2-0) will get the starting assignments on the mound. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
