Baseball Declaws The Bears

Solid pitching and timely hitting has been the theme of Head Coach Sky Smeltzer’s baseball squad this season, yesterday the Roughriders were right on task as they swept a doubleheader at Phoenix College by identical 4-1 scores.

Yavapai is now 13-4-1 overall and remain unblemished in conference play at 8-0.

In the opening game, Rick Anton (5-1) picked up his fifth win on the season allowing only 6 hits and striking out 6. Louie Templeton and Erik Knutson provide the offense with each knocking in a run and scoring a run.

In the nightcap, Braden Degamo hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to provide the offense and Taylor Lewis (2-0) pitched 6 1/3 innings, scattering 5 hits and striking out 7 to record the victory. Russell Havens (2-0) threw the final 2 2/3 innings to get his first save.

YC returns to the friendly confines of Roughrider Park on Saturday, March 1st to entertain Scottsdale Community College in an afternoon twinbill. Kirby Yates (1-1) and Merrill Kelly (2-0) will go to the mound for the Roughriders. 12:00 PM is the scheduled start time.
