Baseball Gets By The Gauchos

Head Coach Sky Smeltzer’s squad has had its share of 1-run losses on this young season. Today, YC collected a pair of 1-run victories at the expense of Glendale Community College, 1-0 and 2-1. The Roughriders improve to 4-0 in ACCAC action and 9-4-1 overall.

In the opening game, pitcher Rick Anton (4-1) pitched a gem carrying a no-hitter into the final inning only to surrender base knocks to the first two GCC batters he faced in the last frame. Erik Knutson provided the only scoring in the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

In the nightcap, Taylor Lewis (1-0) threw a complete game to collect his first victory on the season scattering four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Braden Degamo was 1 for 2 from the plate with an RBI and Kole Calhoun was 1 for 3 with two walks.

On Saturday, Yavapai plays host to Mesa Community College. The Roughriders split with MCC in two meetings last season winning 2-1 and losing 5-4. The twinbill will begin at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
