YC Opens League Play With A Sweep

Castleberry has an epic day going 5 for 7 with eight runs batted in including a home run

The Yavapai College baseball team opened up ACCAC action today with a doubleheader sweep over Gateway Community College at Roughrider Park in Prescott, 13-2 and 8-7. YC needed some last inning heroics to get the job done in the second game after pounding the Geckos in the first game. Head coach Sky Smeltzer’s team is now 7-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league standings.

Kirby Yates (1-1) picked up the win in the first game scattering 2 hits and 5 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. Offensively, Kole Calhoun was a perfect 2 for 2 from the plate with two home runs and three runs batted in. Erik Knutson was also 2 for 2 with one home run and 4 RBI’s. Zac Castleberry had a stellar day beginning in the first game going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a home run.

In the nightcap, Rick Anton (3-1) was the recipient of the late inning heroics collecting his third victory on the year. Castleberry provided the fireworks knocking in the go ahead run with a hit in the seventh inning and with the bases loaded in the final frame he hit a double to chase home the winning runs. Castleberry was 3 for 5 with four RBI’s in the last game of the twinbill.

Yavapai travels to Glendale Community College on Tuesday, February 19th to play the Gauchos. In their two meetings last year, the Roughriders beat GCC twice, 11-10 and 9-3. Rick Anton and Taylor Lewis will be the starting pitchers. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
