YC loses both games in the final innings

Roughrider softball took the defending NJCAA Division II National Champions to the edge of a sweep before dropping both games of a doubleheader in the final innings in Phoenix this afternoon, 3-2 and 6-5. Currently, YC is 11-3 on the season.

Pitcher Jenna Rodriguez (6-1) took a shutout into the sixth inning of the first game before surrendering a 3-run home run to take the loss. In 6 innings, Rodriguez scattered 7 hits, struck out 3, walked 2 and gave up 3 earned runs. Offensively, Alyssa Rhodes, Kacie Smith, Aubrianna Chiquete and Micaela Miller all collected one hit. Rhodes and Chiquete drove in the two Yavapai runs.

In the nightcap, YC took a lead into the final inning only to become the hard luck team giving up the winning run in the last frame. Britinie Hardine took the loss while giving up 11 hits, striking out 5 and giving up 6 earned runs. Caitlin Stangl was stellar from the plate collecting three hits on four at bats including a double, 2 runs scored, 1 run batted in and 1 stolen base. Rhodes, Smith and Brittany Tucker each had a hit with Smith knocking in 2 runs.

Yavapai begins the conference season on Tuesday, February 12th at Scottsdale Community College in a twin bill with the Artichokes beginning at 2:00 PM. On Saturday, February 16th the Roughriders return to the home diamond entertaining Mesa Community College. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
