YC Sweeps Opener
Yavapai softball is back after a 27 year hiatus
Not since April 29, 1981 has the Yavapai College softball team won a game…heck, not since April 29, 1981 has YC fielded a team for that matter. All that changed today at Roughrider Park as the 2008 Roughriders took to the field against Gateway Community College out of Phoenix for their inaugural games of the new season for head coach Stacy Iveson. Yavapai swept the doubleheader from the Geckos, 12-4 and 10-0.
In the first game, Jenna Rodriguez pitched a complete game to earn the victory. In five innings, Rodriguez struck out 5 and gave up 3 earned runs. Additionally, she was 1 for 2 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Brittany Tucker was 2 for 3 from the dish with one run scored, 3 RBI’s and a home run. Aly Rhodes was also 2 for 3 with two runs scored, a double and an RBI. Aubrey Chiquete and Shaunte Duarte were both 2 for 3.
The offense continued in the second game with Chiquete going 2 for 3 with a double, one run scored and an RBI. Duarte was perfect from the plate hitting 2 for 2 with a home run, 2 RBI’s and one run scored. Britinie Hardine pitched 4 shutout innings to record the win and Jessie Pretzer threw a perfect inning to pick up the save.
YC returns to the diamond on Wednesday, January 30th against North Idaho College. The first pitch of the twinbill will begin at12:00 PM and will be played at Roughrider Park on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott.
