Roughrider Basketball Wins One, Loses One

The Yavapai College Roughrider basketball team hosted the Mid November Classic this past weekend in the Storm Center and came away with a win and their first loss of the season.

YC is now 4-1 on the year.

In Friday night’s game, Yavapai faced a familiar opponent in Grand Canyon University JV squad, the same team that YC beat in their first contest of the season, 88-49. The result was the same last night as the Roughriders came away victorious, 83-66.

YC was led by Louis Barraza with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Jon Black added 12 points and 6 caroms and Dennis Booth chipped in 12 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. Yavapai shot an impressive 51 percent from the field and limited GCU JV to 41 percent shooting.

Saturday night, Yavapai lost their first game of the ’07-’08 campaign at the hands of Snow College, UT, 81-80. In the first half, YC found themselves in an unfamiliar position, trailing the Badgers by as many as 22 points. The Riders whittled the deficit to 12 at halftime and behind 53 percent shooting from the field YC made a contest of it with a chance to win it at the end of regulation.

Once again, Barraza led the home team in scoring with 29 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Brandon Gentry added 14 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Bruce Fuller chipped in 12 points and 2 rebounds and Mychal Martinez had 11 points, 3 caroms and 1 assist.

In their next outing, the Roughriders begin conference play hosting Phoenix College on Wednesday, November 28th. Tip-off will be at 7:30 PM in the Storm Center on the campus of Yavapai College in Prescott. All the action can be heard on 95.9 FM KKLD with Zack Calandra providing the play by play.
