On To Nationals!!!
Garcia scores hat trick; 17th national tournament appearance; 1000th second half goal in YC history
Next up for the #2 ranked Roughrider soccer team is the NJCAA National Tournament after beating North Idaho College this afternoon in the West District Championship match at Ken Lindley Field, 4-2. YC is now 21-2-0 on the season and with the victory captured their 17th district title and the 17th time since 1990 that the Riders have advanced to the national competition.
Sophomore Irving Garcia was the hero in the title match as he scored a rare hat trick including the game winner. Francis Khamis netted the only other YC goal.
The scoring began early for the Roughrider kickers as Garcia took a pass from Pavel Panchenko in the fifth minute of regulation and found the back of the net for the first of his 3 scores. YC entered the locker room at halftime with a 1-0 margin and when play resumed Garcia promptly found the goal on a pass from Justin Meram in the 53rd minute. Khamis hit a streaking Garcia in the 59th minute of play for his third goal and ultimately the game winner. In the 66th minute Khamis concluded the YC onslaught with a goal as Rudy Duarte recorded his 29th career assist. North Idaho kicked in two late goals to get on the scoreboard.
Garcia’s third goal of the night not only proved to be the game winner, but it was also the 100th Yavapai goal on the season and the 1000th second half goal in YC history.
The Roughriders must wait until Tuesday, November 6th to find out the pairings for the National Tournament. The quarter-final matches will begin on Thursday, November 15th being played at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas.
