Lady Riders Drop Opening Game
Foul trouble and turnovers doom the Lady Riders
The Lady Rider basketball team dropped their initial contest of the 2007-08 season to College of Eastern Utah this afternoon, 73-70. Foul trouble and turnovers cost YC in a game that saw the lead change hands 5 different times.
Yavapai took an 8 point lead into halftime and extended that lead to 12 within the first minute of the second half. However, playing with only 8 suited players fouls began to mount and YC lost the lead with six minutes to play. With 14 seconds to go in the game, Terri Todecheene hit the go ahead layup but CEU pushed the ball up the floor and Yavapai fouled with 6.1 seconds remaining. The Lady Eagles knocked both free throws in and on the inbounds play, YC turned it over to seal the victory for Eastern Utah.
Yavapai had 4 players in double figures led by sophomore Kellie Snyder with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Sandy Cook added 15 points and 9 rebounds, Tehani Goldsmith and Rachael Beck chipped in 13. Taameka Pruitt was a force on the defensive end of the floor with 12 rebounds and 3 block shots.
Yavapai will play Colorado Northwestern College on Saturday in their second game of the Southern Utah University JUCO Classic. Tip-off will be at 2:15 PM on the SUU campus.
