Roughriders to face Pima in Championship Game

Winning their 80th playoff match in YC history, the Roughrider soccer team advanced to their 18th consecutive Region I Championship Game with a victory over Paradise Valley Community College, 7-1, tonight at Ken Lindley field in Prescott.

The Pumas drew first blood in the opening minutes of the match, but YC countered, and oh how they countered! Justin Meram found the net 4 times on the evening and Rudy Duarte collected his 28th career assist and all 23 players saw playoff action tonight.

YC Scoring

  • 22nd minute – Justin Meram unassisted
  • 27th minute – Justin Meram/assist Irving Garcia
  • 37th minute – Francis Khamis/assist Isaias Hernandez
  • 42nd minute – Denton Brown/assist Isaias Hernandez
  • 44th minute – Pavel Panchenko/assist Francis Khamis
  • 59th minute – Justin Meram/assist Colby Swensen
  • 60th minute – Justin Meram/assist Rudy Duarte

With his assist tonight, Duarte becomes the all-time Yavapai College leader in assists.

Yavapai moves onto the Region I Championship Game against Pima Community College, a 2-1 winner over Mesa Community College earlier in the day. Pima handed the Roughriders one of their only two losses on the year last week in Tucson, 3-2.

YC is now 19-2-0 on the season and a chance to record their 17th NJCAA Region I Championship on Saturday. The winner of the title will advance to the NJCAA West District Playoffs against the winner of Region 18. The match will be at the site of the Arizona champion.

Saturday night’s title game will kick-off at 6:00 PM and will be played at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott.
