Aztecs Top the Roughriders
First loss in Tucson in YC soccer history
In what could be a preview of a possible Region I title match, Pima Community College came away with a victory over the Roughriders in Tucson this afternoon, 3-2. The loss marks the lone blemish in league play for YC and their first defeat since losing to San Jacinto College in the Big Five Tournament Championship in September.
Yavapai began the scoring on the afternoon in the very first minute of play when Rudy Duarte received a ball from Pavel Panchenko and deposited it into net. Pima scored midway through the first half to knot the score at 1 and both teams went into halftime tied.
The Aztecs found the back of the net in the 68th and 80th minute of regulation to take a 3-1 lead and Yavapai’s Francis Khamis concluded the scoring on the day as he found the goal on a pass from Evan McNiel in the 86th minute of play.
The Roughriders are now 16-1-0 in league play and 17-2-0 overall with the 2007 final regular season game on Saturday. YC has already wrapped up the ACCAC title that secures home Region I play-off games. Pima (13-4-0) clinched 2nd place with their victory over Yavapai today.
YC entertains the Cougars from South Mountain Community College on Saturday, October 20th at Ken Lindley Field in Prescott. The Riders beat SMCC in Phoenix earlier this year 5-2. The match will begin at 6:00 PM. A week from today, October 24th, Yavapai begins the Region I Play-offs at home against an opponent yet to be determined. That match will begin at 6:00 PM.
