Roughrider Soccer: All Alone At The Top
YC scores four unanswered goals to seal the victory
In a battle for 1st place in the ACCAC, the Yavapai College soccer team continued to prove their dominance of the number one spot with a 4-1 victory over the Pima Community College Aztecs tonight in Prescott Valley. YC improves to 8-0-0 in the league and PCC drops to 6-2-0.
The Aztecs jumped out to their only lead of the evening scoring in the 7th minute of the match. The Roughriders answered that goal with one of their own in the 34th minute as freshman Justin Meram hit the back of the net on a ball from sophomore Rudy Duarte. Right before the end of the first half (41st minute), Duarte found Meram again to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
In the second half, on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute, sophomore Denton Brown put a ball passed the goalkeeper and in the 87th minute sophomore Irving Garcia finished off the scoring with an unassisted knock to ice the game and improve their overall record to 9-1-0.
In the most recent NJCAA Division One Soccer poll, YC finds themselves in the #2 spot and Pima is ranked #10. The top spot is owned by San Jacinto College, TX, the only team to have beaten the Roughriders this season.
The Roughriders take to the road for their next three matches: Saturday, September 22 at South Mountain Community College; Wednesday, September 26 at Mesa Community College; and Saturday, September 29th at Paradise Valley Community College. On Wednesday, October 3rd the home squad will return to Ken Lindley Field to play host to the Artichokes from Scottsdale Community College.
