Roughriders Swat Pesky AWC

Justin Meram scores 2 goals to lead YC to program’s 399th victory

Hall of Fame coach Mike Pantalione is one win away from his 400th career victory after tonight’s 2-1 win over the Arizona Western College Matadors. YC is now 5-0-0 in league play and 6-1-0 overall. AWC falls to to 1-5-0.

The #3 ranked Roughriders began the scoring in the early going with freshman Justin Meram knocking the ball in the net on an assist from sophomore Rudy Duarte in the 16th minute of play. The Matadors tied the game thanks to a deflected shot off of a YC defender. Meram finished off the scoring for the evening right before halftime, kicking in the game winner in the 42nd minute off of a pass from sophomore Camilo Valencia.

Yavapai will be seeking the program’s and Pantalione’s 400th victory on Saturday at Chandler/Gilbert Community College. Pantalione would become only the second NJCAA Division I soccer coach with at least 400 wins. Hall of Fame coach, Pete Sorber, has 415 victories in his 30 year career.

Before returning home, YC will play at CGCC on Saturday at 6:00 PM and a rare Monday night game at Scottsdale Community College with another 6:00 PM kick-off time. Next Wednesday, September 19th YC will faceoff against league leading Pima Community College at the Prescott Valley Amphitheater. Game tiime will be at 6:00 PM.
